Hyptonize with blue eyes - Eyes Makeup beauty Tips

Create your own blue look with these simple steps

1 Let's begin the eye makeup with concealing the eyes. If you have dark circles, you should use a corrector before applying your concealer

2 Now, use a cello-tape to mark a guideline for your eye makeup. You can draw the line with a free hand too if you are good at it.

3 It's time now to apply a bright turquoise blue on the moving area of your eye lid. Now, apply a bright gold eye shadow on the inner corner of your eye lid. Applying a light eye shadow on the inner corner of your eye lid will open up your eyes. Hence, it will give an illusion of bigger eyes.

4 Now, take a blending brush and blend the shades softly and gently so that no harsh lines are seen. Do not over blend it. At the same time, do not swipe too much, so that the metallic finish of these shadows are not lost and mixed. There should be a soft gradation of colors. Remove the cello-tape carefully.

5 Apply dark kohl, a bit thicker than usual on the upper and lower lash line. Extend the eyeliner to create a wing at the outer corner of the eye.

6 Remove all the fall-out of the eye-shadows below the eye with the help of a cotton swab. Apply a light concealer to highlight your eyes.

COMBAT WINTER Skin woes - Skin care Tips

Winter probably tends to turn even the most oily skin dry and flaky. Needless to say, other skin types suffer all the more. Use these tips to beat those skin woes and bring out the radiance.

When the temperature drops and the cool winds blow, our bodies go through a re-adjustment phase which needs support from inside out. Our skin is the largest organ of our bodies that on one level acts like a shield preventing our internal organs from falling out and on another level is an excretory organ that releases waste and toxins. These toxins are released through the vital organs of the colon, kidneys, stomach and liver, so right nutrition that nourishes these specific organs is essential.
The skin also shows the health and vibrancy of these organs by its natural hydration, colouration and flexibility. The skin is designed to stretch and also to shrink, its pores to open and close, and sweat to maintain a balanced homeostatis! It also reveals the wellbeing of the body showing how well you are taking care of your diet, exercise and hygiene.
The skin becomes flaky in winter due to a few influential factors. One of the key elements is that the skin is becoming dehydrated very fast before it has time to build up inner moisture and oils that can nourish the skins layers internally.
In very cold countries, people tend to eat a lot of fish as natural fish oils are rich in Omega 3, particularly herrings, salmon, mackerel and eel, which are all very oily. Eating these foods regularly all year round will build up the reserves you need to take you through the winter months and keep your skin high in natural oils, hydrated, supple and glossy. Your hair too will benefit looking healthy and shiny. Olive oil is another highly respected nourishing ingredient that not only keeps your insides slippery clean, but is also an excellent pure body oil to rub into the skin itself. Olive oil has a very similar biological makeup of cells as your own skin and is renowned for its replenishing and healing properties.
In order to shed the dry skin that has built up, begin each day with a dry body brush before you shower to stimulate the lymph and shed the surface dead skin cells. Then exfoliate the whole body using a rich oily body scrub. There are many in the market, but you can make your own using pure olive oil, or coconut or almond oil and mixing in some natural medium-sized granules of sea salt. You can also add a few drops of pure essential oils such as neroli (orange blossom) or sandalwood, or lavender to give an enjoyable aroma to the blend and add a more concentrated essence. Then simply scoop some into the palm of your hand and rub vigorously all over your body and shower off. Your skin is then both exfoliated and moisturised and will feel great all day long. Doing this a few times a week creates miracles for your skin.
As your skin is also eliminating gases released from the colon, it is important to keep your digestion free of congestion as a blocked colon will also dehydrate the skin. Drinking aloe vera juice is known to be very helpful and also great for hydrating the whole body and skin. Products that contain aloe vera, whether skin creams or cleansers, will also help to re-hydrate and Quench a thirsty skin condition. Exfoliation and moisturising are
the two main factors in treating the skin superficially and preventing flaky reactions to the weather. Your face is obviously more sensitive than your body, so too much exfoliation may not be good. However, I recommend using a super-rich night
cream. It is the smart way to feed your skin as when you are sleeping, your body absorbs more of the beneficial ingredients. So before you sleep be sure to cleanse off the day's dust and dirt and apply a generous layer of cream that suits your skin quality. Waking up with soft dewy skin is just lovely and a nice way to greet your face in the morning. Rose water to soothe your eyes and also a light hydrating eye gel or cream prevents dryness around your eyes and makeup will also look much better.
Also, avoid cold drinks as this also tends to create dryness in the body.
Regular exercise will also keep the circulation flowing through you and maintain a good body temperature to activate the sweat glands and boost healthy perspiration for moisture, natural oils and inner heat.

CRYSTAL CLEAR - Tips for clear and rejuvenated skin

Let's face it. Clear skin is something that we all want. Some of us have it genetically, some of us don't, and the rest don't really know what it takes to keep it. Inspite, of all the care that we take, sometimes it seem as if our skin is impossible to manage, especially when you wake up and find a rising red pimple on your face.

Also, acne is common during puberty when hormones go nuts, causing the skin to overproduce sebum-an oil generating hormone. Because many oil-producing glands are on the forehead, nose and chin, that is why this area is most prone to pimples.
The key is to pamper yourself with the basics. Good skin care and healthy lifestyle choices can help delay the natural aging process and prevent various skin problems.
Plenty of restful sleep is very important for everybody. Seven-eight hours of good sleep are a must to give a kick start to our day.
One should drink plenty of water too. This is one of the most important and easy things you can do to keep your skin healthy and clear. Keep your body well hydrated as it helps in keeping the pores open. Drink six to eight glasses per day. Take less of carbohydrated drinks like colas and soda. Although, an occasional soda is not going to kill you, but do not overdo it! Second, start a diet that consist of plenty of fruits and veggies that are mostly water such as various bell peppers, celery, apples, oranges, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes and grapes.
Buy only noncomedogenic makeup. Noncomedogenic means that the product doesn't block pores, and it's been scientifically tested to prove that. Wash your face daily with a gentle and natural facial soap. Moisturise with an oil-free lotion. Make sure not to use harsh bar soaps, because they can dry your skin out. Washing daily will remove any excess oils, and moisturising will help keep skin supple.
Always rely on the natural resources to save you. Make-up and medicines only exploit you and your sensitive skin. Natural sources like neem, strawberry, curd, besan – these little things from our kitchen itself can help us do wonders.
If not this, then you can go for natural soaps like neem-based which have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral properties, which helps to keep the skin soft and supple, helps to protect the skin from eczema, infections, acne and nourishes it. Neem soap is also recommended by doctors to prevent and treat acne.
They contain pure essential oils to rejuvenate and soothes the skin. Neem soaps are beneficial for supersensitive skins. These are the only premium 100% natural soaps which are animal fat-free and do not make use of any chemical compounds or artificial fragrances.
Did you know that strawberry can also work wonders for your skin? A vegetable-based soap with fabulous strawberry scent cleanses and helps condition the skin. It contains strawberry juice and contains derivatives of palm oil and glycerin. This strawberry-scented soap gives a rich lather and leaves skin cleansed and refreshed. Also, soaps and shampoos based on the alovera are very useful for different purposes.

Makeup Mined FROM THE EARTH

The biggest benefit of using mineral makeup is that your skin looks younger, brighter, and the natural texture shows through. Mineral make-up is also hypoallergenic and ideal for sensitive skin.

Like most of us, you love the notion of a flawless complexion you so want to get that dewy texture of skin that models have in an editorial shoot, but the thought of layering on foundation and powder scares you. You want your skin to breathe and the natural texture to show through. In short you want to go au naturel minus the flaws. Our advice – wear mineral makeup.

So what is mineral makeup? They are makeup products like foundations, concealers, blushes and lipsticks made with minerals mined from the earth. Turns out, even Cleopatra, that ageless paragon of beauty, is said to have used the natural pigments of ground minerals to enhance her legendary looks. What sets mineral makeup apart is its texture and finish – silkier, finer grains that have a less powdery effect, and almost blend into the skin. This is why mineral makeup, especially foundation, gives your skin a smooth finish without making it look made up.

The biggest benefit of using mineral makeup is that your skin definitely looks younger and brighter. “Unlike regular makeup products, mineral make-up is based on a hypoallergenic loose powder that naturally nourishes the skin, contains no perfumes, talc, alcohol, dyes, mineral oil or preservatives. All these additives can cause skin allergy or adversely affect the skin on prolonged usage. Mineral makeup mainly consists of titanium oxide and zinc oxide, which are anti inflammatory, non-comedogenic with a lasting coverage that is safe even on sensitive skin,” says Dr Apratim Goel, consultant cosmetologist, L'Orรฉal, and cosmetic cermatologist at MyCutis Skin Clinic. Vimi Joshi, senior artist, M.A.C Cosmetics points out that for women who are now veering towards natural products for skin and hair, mineral makeup makes a lot of sense. “They get a fresh and beautiful finish without clogging the pores, or getting a cakey appearance,” she adds.

One may ask the secret behind the lustrous finish that this makeup gives. Explains Joshi, “Mineral makeup products have light-reflective properties, so light bounces off the face and creates a youthful glow. Another plus is that minerals bind to the skin, rather than sinking into it like traditional formulas. This makes them less prone to becoming cakey and drying out your complexion, which can accentuate lines and wrinkles.”

Working with mineral makeup can be tricky for women used to the regular makeup application. The first point to remember is that you need to really work the product into the skin. If you just dust it lightly, you stand the chance of looking ashen or even have streaked makeup.

"Before you put on this makeup, moisturise and hydrate your skin really well. Wait for at least five to eight minutes after moisturising to let the lotion sink into the skin. Then use a thick rounded buffing brush to buff the powder really well into the skin. You will get matte yet polished skin.

 Set the Base

The best thing about mineral-based foundation is its light airy texture, which means you can slowly build the intensity of coverage for a seamless, smooth finish. In this case, know that less is more so start with few drops of liquid mineral foundation or a light dusting of mineral foundation powder. Blend from the centre of the face to the outer edge, in small circular movements, remembering to also blend along the jaw-line and onto the neck for a flawless finish. This will ensure a sheer, natural-looking coverage. Pay special attention to areas around the forehead, nose and chin to eliminate the appearance of any excess shine or red areas. Re-apply if desired, to build up for fuller coverage.

Do Up Your Eyes

Since mineral eye shadows are in powder form, the best way to apply them is with a small, high-density bristle brush to avoid ‘shadow scatter'. Remember that the colour is sheer, almost transparent in case of mineral based eye shadow – so you may have to build the colour. It works best to create a subtle effect. Start by dipping both sides of the brush into the eye shadow, tap off any excess powder, then press the colour onto eyelids. Gently blend over the eyelid in small circular motions, re-apply to increase colour intensity. The best way to create an impact is to blend in three complementing shades.

Shine Your Cheeks

Apply as you would use regular powder blushers, but always use a dense, compact blusher brush, as large loose-hair brushes can scatter loose powder over the face and make blending harder. Work the powder into the brush in circular motions, tap off any excess, then blend onto the cheeks, working into the skin so that it is fully absorbed for a sheer wash of colour. Apply to the apple of the cheeks, along the cheekbones, applying the colour into the skin, so that the shade is fully absorbed with seamless blending. Re-apply to intensify colour, or use a darker shade to contour the cheeks.

Debunking makeup myths

Never go way too lighter shade foundation assuming that it will make you look brighter, rather go one shade lighter foundation and 2 shade lighter compact which will help you achieve the same brightness and doesn't oxidise.

Orange Corrector is like a weapon, if you don't use it properly, then it will ruin your complete makeup.

Many people use it unnecessarily thinking this is the only solution, rather use skin tone concealer when you have very mild pigmentation.

Try to use moisturizer which has SPF instead of using sunscreen lotion and dehydration lotion.

Most of them use lip balm for prepping the lips, but it's just a temporary solution and doesn't help.

Instead use a lip conditioner which will help with dry lips, skin peeling and even lip pigmentation.

When you don't have the necessity of full makeup, skip the foundation, use skin tone concealer and foundation plus compact which will give you a very natural look and stay whole day without touch up.

Beauty of Bespoke Traditions - Muslim weddings in India

Everything is grand in the Islamic way, and of course weddings too, although ritualistically simple they are still grand gaiety affairs.

Muslim weddings in India are generally known for their grandeur; a tradition that has come down from the Imedieval Moghul rulers and Sultans of India. Muslim weddings are events of a lifetime, attended by friends and relatives, brides adorning bright costumes, jewelry, and it's more renowned for a sumptuous feast. From Egypt to South Africa, Middle East and even in different parts of India, Muslim wedding traditions follow completely different customs, in spite of certain common core religious traditions.

The Indian Muslims share the same pattern of ‘nikah' with that of the middle-east. Though the Muslim weddings are multiday celebrations, the core ceremony is very simple with few rituals and more flexible than any other religion. But many Muslim families are very conservative about their ethnicity.

Muslim weddings called nikah (Urdu word), do not need any muhurat (auspicious time) and can take place on any day of the year except the sacred months of Muharram and Ramadan. The month of Shawwal is the most preferred month and Sunday is the most favored day.

Unlike other religions, Muslim weddings needn't take place in a mosque. Traditionally either the bride's or the groom's house were nikah venues, but now people prefer to move to banquet halls for more lavishness and to tackle space constraints. Any Muslim who is well versed in Islamic tradition can officiate a wedding. However, many mosques have marriage officers, called qazi or maulavi, who would oversee marriages and confirm required civil documents.

 Pre-Wedding Extravaganzas

The pre-wedding days witness many lively parties and ceremonies in strict Islam traditions. Many Indian Mughal and Nizami descendants follow a typical Pakistani tradition with a weeklong singing and dancing.

 Istikhara, Imam-Zamin and Magni

Istikhara is the first ritual where the religious head offers prayers to God and takes his approval to conduct the wedding. After this, the groom's mother visits the bride's house with sweets and silver or gold coins wrapped in a silk cloth known as 'Imam- Zamin'. This is followed by Magni where the groom's family visits the bride's house with traditional delicacies, sweets and fruits.

Dholki

The wedding celebrations begin with the dholki (named after dholk, a drum), one to two weeks before the actual wedding ceremony. Both families traditionally hold their own dholki. Friends and family members gather to practice songs and dances for the upcoming mehendi ceremony, and sing and dance beating the dholk. The women closest to the bride or groom usually choreograph the dances, and it's mostly women who perform. This will be accompanied by elaborate dinner.

Mehendi and Baraat

Mehendi ceremony takes place on the eve of the wedding. It is the most festive event, filled with noise and colour. In some places the mehendi function is conducted separately, while in recent times many families prefer to go jointly. Though basically a bridal shower, when combined with the mehendi and baraat it becomes more colourful.

The bride, along with all the women gets henna designs on her hands and feet and for this, she will be escorted to the stage by six female relatives or friends who sing traditional songs and dance. Her head will be covered with dupatta or a long scarf.

The groom arrives with his entourage of male guests, called the baraat with loud songs and dance. While entering the ceremony hall they are greeted by the bride's family and friends, standing in two parallel lines singing traditional songs and welcome them with drinks (sherbet).

The Core Ceremony- Nikah

The main wedding day is less eventful than the preceding days. The core function called Nikah is conducted by a Maulvi or Qasi or any senior family member. The priest reads certain verses from the holy Quran and thereafter a proposal and acceptance takes place. The bride and the groom will be in different rooms. They may or may not see each other, depending on how conservative the families are. The Qazi heads to each room and asks both the bride and the groom, their consent for the marriage. On the bride's behalf, a representative called a wali will answer. As the couple signs the marriage contract or license, the pair will be brought together by the priest and called as husband and wife.

Usually the groom's side sends the proposal to the bride's side for consent. The consent is very important for legalizing the wedding. On the wedding day the groom's family is supposed to offer the bride's family with some Mehar (nuptial gift). Only close friends and family members will be present to witness the nikaah.

The bride typically wears bright hued ghaagra with a heavily pleated skirt, or saree along with a blouse embellished in gold. Her head will be covered with a dupatta or a large scarf. Grooms either wear sherwani with turban or a Western style suit. Some wear a veil of roses on their head before the bride enters.

For many Muslims, the Islamic ceremony is counted as the actual wedding, and not the confirmation of wedding in a register office.

Post Nikah Ceremonies Dinner, Prayers and Aarsimashaf

The wedding ceremony is followed by a lavish dinner for which Muslims are famous for, and the newlyweds are allowed to sit together. The couple is then allowed to see each other through mirrors.

The groom will be taken to the zenana (ladies' section) to receive blessings of the elder women. At the threshold, he gives money and gifts to the sister of the bride. As a game, sometimes the bride's friends or female relatives will steal the groom's shoes and he will have to give gifts or money as they demand, to get it back.

Rukshat Ceremony:

This is the farewell ceremony as the bride's father places his daughter's hand in the groom's hand and asks him to take care of her. A procession escorts the couple to the vehicle throwing flower petals on the couple. The bride is welcomed at the groom's mother house as the mother-in-law places a Quran on her head as she enters.

Valima

The groom's family hosts the valima, (feast), on the wedding night to welcome the bride. It signifies the consummation of the wedding, and is equivalent to a wedding reception. It also helps bridge gaps between both families. At some places valima occurs one or two days after the wedding.

Kashmiri's have a slightly different tradition, with many elaborate pre wedding rituals, especially with many unique and rich Kashmiri delicacies like vazhavan (dinner with 30-35 dishes) and gift exchanges. For many states, Nikaah is an engagement and the girl continues to stay with her parents, and will be accompanied to the groom's house any time later with an elaborate valima.

However, Muslim weddings vary a lot with many interesting aspects and moreover, with grand dinners that stands atop.

Traditional Nair wedding ceremony

A Nair wedding ceremony probably the shortest in tradition gets over in jiffy; but a treat to watch, with its simple traditions and embedded rituals.

The Nairs of Kerala have a lineage of dignified martial nobility and have created a flutter in arenas like business and aristocracy. Their wedding ceremony is also distinct in its customs and rituals. Their wedding ceremony which is probably the shortest in tradition gets over in jiffy, but a treat to watch, with its simple traditions and embedded rituals. Let's unravel the mystical beauty of the affair.

Pre Wedding Rituals

Nischayam

A marriage proposal moves forward with the horoscope matching and even in the modern world, this tradition is strictly followed. Nairs do not take a chance with their conjugal harmony by forgoing this step.

Pennu Kanal

If horoscopes are matched, pennu kanal or meeting of the prospective bride and the groom happens mostly in the girl's house and can be a lower key affair. If both the boy and the girl liked each other and are willing to proceed with the marriage, the bride's family visit the groom's family in a function called veedu kanal.

Vivaha Nischayam or Jatakam Koda

Once both families are satisfied with the alliance, the marriage will be officially announced in the presence of elders and close friends, which is called 'vivaha nischayam' or betrothal. An astrologer is consulted prior to this, for an auspicious date and time for the wedding. Traditionally niscahayam will be held in the bride's house and the bride's maternal uncle is the main coordinator who announces the event. Nischayam can be a simple affair or a grand event according to the wish and convenience of both parties. In some areas, rings are exchanged during the function which is called 'mothiram mattal. In many places the Nair Service Society people from both sides will assemble at the bride's house and parents of both bride and groom will exchange letters regarding the time and venue of the marriage in their presence. Thereafter groom's sister will adorn jasmine flowers on girl's hair. A feast will be conducted thereafter.

Ayana or Dakshina

A function will be held separately at the bride's and groom's house on the wedding eve, where they take blessings of the elders. Close family members and friends will be invited for the function and a feast is arranged. The bride will be dressed in traditional saree, bejeweled and with mehendi in her hands. Though mehendi is not a traditional custom with Nair weddings, it is fast catching up as a new custom. In South Kerala, this function is accompanied by girls dancing in a circle around a lit brass oil lamp while old women clap in rhythm and twist fine cotton into a thousand wicks for the wedding day.

Namaskaram

On the Wedding Day, elders from the bride's side take the sacred thali (mangalsutra) to the temple, to get it blessed. After taking the blessings of the elders by touching their feet, the bride is taken to the wedding venue. Traditionally weddings were held in bride's house or in their ancestral home. But now it could be a temple, or any venue near to the bride's house.

Wedding Ceremony

Varavelpu

Both bride and groom with their parents and close relatives arrives to the venue separately. In the mandap, the bridegroom is received ceremoniously with the bride's brother washing his feet on a wooden plank and her aunt performing aarti. This ceremony is called Varavelpu. The groom and his people will be escorted to the mandap by young girls from the bride's side holding traditional brass lamps in a plate (thaalam), ashtamangalyam (eight auspicious articles) and platters of rice, turmeric and flowers, oil lamps made of coconut shells etc. This is called thala poli which is happens with the accompaniment of traditional music of Nadaswaram. He is then made to sit on a wooden plank on the right side of the canopy which is decorated with flowers. The bride is then escorted to the mandap in the same way. The bride and the groom thanks the audience and the bride is made to stand facing East, opposite to the groom. Dakshina to parents is given on both sides by the bride and the groom. In North Kerala, bride also takes blessing of the groom by touching his feet.

Thalikettu

At the auspicious moment, the family priest or an elder member performs the nuptial. The couple walks around agni thrice and the groom ties the thali which will be handed over to him by his father. Thalikettu happens with the beating of drums (ketti melam) and the ceremonial ululating sounds of women (vai kurava). This is the most significant one of Nair wedding tradition. This is followed by a garland exchange.

Pudava Koda

The groom hands over the pudava (clothes to change into) to the bride, on a platter with betel leaves and areca nuts. This is a significant promise to provide everything for her through out their marital life. The wedding rings are exchanged if it is not done before.

Kai Pidichu Kodukkal

The bride's father places her right hand on the right hand of the groom, symbolically transferring the responsibility of taking care of his daughter. This ritual is also known as 'kanyadaan! Then the newly-wed couple, takes three rounds around agni in clock wise direction, holding hands. The groom's mother or sister also ties the bride a chain symbolizing their acceptance. After this they are made to sit down. Elder relatives one by one come to the stage to bless them, and give them sweets (banana in sweet milk) which is known as 'mathuram kodukkal'and gifts.

Sadya

The joyous union is celebrated by a grand Kerala sadya which is a wholly vegetarian fare served in banana leaves.

Kudivepu

Once the guests are dispersed, the bride is bid farewell to the groom's house, accompanied by her close relatives. The ritual is called 'kudiveppu' or 'grihapravesha! The bride enters the new house with nilavilakku (lit brass lamp) in hand, drapped in the saree given by the groom and is received by the glow of aarti resting on a platter of rice mixed with turmeric. The couple enters with their right foot forward and with the bride kicking off the proverbial pot of rice heralding a sense of prosperity.

Adukkala Kanal

The bride's relatives who accompany her with sweets and savouries make it a custom to see the daughter's new house and environment. The groom's family may present the bride's family with clothes and sweets. A small feast will also be arranged.

Reception

Often there will be a reception at the groom's house soon after this, where their relatives, friends and neighbours come to celebrate their union. It can be at the house itself or in a nearby venue or hotel. The newly wed couples visit the bride's house on the fourth day accompanied by relatives and friends. A Nair wedding is drenched in tradition and with an inspirational simplicity, with no added frills. Each and every custom of the ceremony has a clarity and deep symbolism.

FOR THE PERFECT BRIDAL LOOK

A perfect wedding is a dream come true of every bride celebrating the biggest day of her life. The pictures on this day make for a lifetime of memories and the one thing that every bride wants, is to look picture perfect. So make up turns out to be a key deciding factor, hence Mehendi brings you some excellent bridal make up tips which can make your “D” day a little more special. The aim of your wedding make up must be to highlight your best features and hide the flaws. Plus you also want your make up to last the whole day, even after all the hugging, crying and eating, you must look fresh and not caked up even at the end of the day.

Experts advise the would-be brides to go for a minimalist and subtle makeup- a guaranteed trendsetter this wedding season. Simple beauty tricks like using a gel foundation as base makeup, muted and lighter tones for a radiant look, a suitable hairdo, choosing the right lip brush or avoiding too many coats of mascara can assure an appearance worthy of many compliments.

Get your bridal makeup right by following these rules:

 For your face:

Stick to a classic look. Avoid trends, as they will very soon look outdated in pictures. -Use a bronzing powder to warm your skin tone. -Use a natural bristle brush, lightly apply colour to the areas of the face where the sun would naturally hit: forehead, cheeks and the bridge of the nose. If needed, apply a light dusting on your neck and chest for even all-over colour.

Give your foundation staying powder by using a gel foundation primer before you apply your makeup. Add a light dusting of loose powder to prevent any unwanted shine.

Select more golden-toned bases and concealers - these translate better for photography whether on video or in pictures.

Use more natural, lighter and “cleaner" colours. These flattering shades will not look washed out and the contrast will not be too great with your dress. Your natural radiance should be on display, not bright colours. These more muted tones work best, not only for you, but for the wedding party as well.

Avoid any ‘make-up surprises' on your special day. Schedule a make-up consultation for yourself at least four weeks before the wedding for a trial run.

Don't get carried away with shimmer highlights or light-refractive makeup. In photos your shimmer can easily turn into an unflattering and highly reflective shine.

Don't use a heavy pressed powder to set your foundation. Too much powder can leave your skin looking chalky and lifeless in your wedding photos.

For your eyes:

Use a brow powder or gel in a colour that is one shade deeper than your natural hair colour to keep your brows looking their best. If your brows are scant, lightly fill them in with a brow pencil in a light neutral shade and then, using a brow powder and brush, go over this shape using a stippling technique to create a natural effect.

Use neutrals to contour and highlight your eyes. For eyeliners, stick to the classics: black, navy or brown.

Get lush lashes by first using an eyelash curler and then applying two coats of lengthening mascara. Waterproof is always a good choice; it's longer lasting and won't run even if you shed a few tears of joy.

Using an eye shadow primer ensures smudgefree makeup, a must when you're wearing expensive bridal couture.

To lift your eyes a bit, apply a highlighter just below your brow bone.

For your lips and cheeks:

Become a blushing bride by choosing a warm flattering cheek colour in a pink peach or rose tone. When applying the colour, focus the blush on the apples of the cheek and blend the excess back and up toward the hairline. For oily skin, powder blushes is the perfect choice, but if your skin tends to be a bit dry, try a cream blush to achieve a dewy natural glow.

Choose a lip colour in a warm, fairly bright shade. Roses, pinks and reds look great in photos.

Apply lip-liner evenly all over the lips, under the lipstick to make it last longer. When lipstick fades, it will fade evenly without leaving the outer lip liner only.

Remember to wear a blush. Flash photography can leave you looking washed out.

Manicured nails:

Don't forget your nails - on your wedding day a lot of attention will be paid to the bride's new wedding ring and hands.

Other important tips:

Blotting Paper:

An often over looked but very important part of a kit, blotting papers are essential and very handy to keep you looking fresh faced. These small bits of paper absorb excess oil without compromising on all the blending that went into creating a perfect base on your face.

Foot cushions:

Though not in your kit, foot cushions are essential so you stand tall and comfortable. Given that you will be on your feet the whole day, a little padding for your feet will take you a long way. If there is one thing we strongly advice you against, it is uncomfortable shoes.

BRIDAL NAIL ART

Imagine this- A bride scrawling an endless to-do list with the choices of clothes, make up and jewellery for her BIG day.

Among the chaos of hundreds of other details, nails would probably be the last thing on a bride's mind to do marking it just for a manicure. Well, not anymore.

The newest addition to a bride's kitty is Designer nails. In the race of her clothes, jewellery and shoes being designer, designer nails are now topping the brides wish charts. For instant glam, brides get Nail Extensions (gel or acrylic) to make their nails look like a million dollars. This finger make up technique is the hottest trend among brides now giving them an option to go crazy and creative with their nails. Why Bridal Nail Art: When there are women hovering to see that oh-so-lovely rock in the bride's hand let their exotic nails become another point of discussion among them too. In performing every ritual a bride's hands do the talking and every bride wants to look perfect from head to toe. Now candid photography being the style only makes nail art significant as the bride's innate gestures are captured by the photographer. Well decorated nails would speak volumes about the bride. And it doesn't hurt when the ten beauties get that eyebrow raise which they absolutely deserve.

Hottest Trends:

Ingenious nail art reminds us of arty paintings except for the fact that here the tiny canvas (nail bed) makes the artist's work more tricky and challenging. When talking about trends, “A lot of brides love to replicate the work of their outfit on their nails or get diamond or gold dangles pierced. Some brides play safe with a classic French manicure with a line of glitter or stones. Most brides prefer Gel nails or extensions because of their longevity and fun element it offers” Gold faded tips is a versatile option for the brides as there would be many different outfits in the festivities. Whether you are an OTT bride or prefer a more muted look, nail artists can provide you the dream nails you were looking for. Kerala based Simar shares, “ Brides love 3D nail art, brush art, Swarovski and lately Shellac. Shellac and Gel nails shines like a glass, don't chip and can be played around with endlessly.” Well, brides start drawing fantasies and use your imagination. Not even sky is the limit.

How it works:

A meeting is fixed in prior with the nail artist to discuss the wedding outfit, jewellery and other details so the nail art is in sync with the bride's look. The artist conceptualises the nail art on artificial nails showing the possibilities and incorporates the bride's ideas if any. Before the wedding the nail art is done on the bride's natural nails or extensions.

Nail Care:

A little time, effort and care can yield, would be brides healthy and stunning nails. Using cuticle oil every day is a must. Never cut your cuticles instead push them back as cuticle cutters can damage the nails if cut deeply. Use an acetone free remover instead of a regular acetone, as acetone invites dryness on the nails. Use a hand and feet cream regularly to keep them moisturised. Keeping in mind importance of precision for your D-day, indulge in luxury wedding manicures & pedicures to make sure your hands and toes are absolutely photo perfect. Before you tie the knot ensure that all the eyes are on you, for the right reasons of course.

THE GOWN STORY

From the slinky columnal evening gown to the floats-n-flounces fairytale dress, NILAVILAKKU talks about the wedding gown in all its elegant splendour

Remember the wedding gown scene in the first instalment of the SIx and the City movie? Yes, the one where Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw opens that humungous gift box only to reveal THE most beautiful ivory satin, full-skirted wedding gown that British designer Vivienne Westwood gifts her. Carrie's joy and wide-eyed wonder is what most brides-to-be must feel when they first take a look at the dress that they've probably spent months and even years agonising over... down to the very last detail. It is almost like a living character in the whole wedding hoopla!

So, what is the latest in gown couture? Is white still the 'it' shade and has the modern bride eschewed the tulle enhanced bustle on the skirt of her dress in favour of a more slinky silhouette? And is the train a relic of the past? Well, to be brutally honest, unlike most other aspects of fashion, bridal couture has never really swayed with the vagaries of what is trendy today and what is not, And this is precisely because of what it is-couture made especially for the bride and not merely bought off the shelf. She can choose to have it made in whatever colour, style and even length.

Cases in point. Delhi-based designer duo Gauri and Nainika Karan have recently experimented with the micro-mini wedding dress that features their signature origami folds. Mumbai's James Ferreira has gone down the midi route of the 80s with knee and calf-length wedding dresses that not only have that certain je ne sais quoi, but are also highly reusable-something a traditional wedding gown is sadly not known to be. As far as colour is concerned, we have recently seen gowns in a whole spectrum of hues with shades like old rose, beige, grey and even black (see box) featuring in the bridal collections of designers like Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor, Shane and Falguni Peacock and Wendell Rodricks.

Fabrics like the classic trio of satin, tulle and lace are seen today jostling for space with previously so-called non-bridal fabrics like lamรฉ, spandex and even PVC. Embellishments have also graduated from mere crystals, beads and pearls to 3D embossing, metal riveting, feathers and leather. With so much on offer, we can't blame the bride for getting confused when asked to choose her dream gown. The best solution for her is to pick a gown's silhouette based on her figure.

THE FULL SKIRT GOWN

This is the classic Cinderella gown made of a fitted bodice that could even be in the lace-up corset style, with or without sleeves, with a traditional full skirt. This silhouette is supremely versatile, in that it works superbly for most body types, especially full-figured, pear-shaped or petite brides. Dupion silk, organza and tulle are the perfect fabrics to go with this cut. A can-can or stiff buckram underskirt enhances the fullness.

THE PRINCESS GOWN

Also referred to as the A-line gown, this silhouette typically has a strapless tapered top, sloped waist and flared skirt in floaty lace, gossamer, tissue or any other light fabric. A-line dresses tend to flatter women who have figures that are heavier in the hips and waist. For added drama, a detachable chapel-length train can be added as well as a shrug to cover the bare shoulders during the church ceremony.

THE GODDESS GOWN

Taking a cue from the 60s sheath dress that was made from one cut of fabric on either side, this gown is fitted and columnal and almost always made of a stretchable fabric like lamรฉ without any embroidery or embellishments. The top can have a pleated drape on one shoulder almost like a pallu, which is very Grecian and the bottom can extend to just below the ankles. For the minimalistic bride with a figure to die for, this gown is the ultimate 'Goddess' dress.

THE FISHTAIL GOWN

Fitted on the top right till the knees, this gown then fans out resemble a fishtail with a small train trailing behind. Perfect for the bride with a small bust and waist, but scarily unflattering for the heavy-hipped bride. The sleeve length can vary from full sleeves to Magyar sleeves to spaghetti straps. The fabrics that work for this silhouette are raw silk and self-embroidered brocade with tulle for the tail and train part of the dress.

The Mehendi AFFAIR - Wedding

An extremely important part of Indian wedding rituals, a mehendi ceremony preceding the wedding is one of the most special affairs for the bride-to-be.

The Hindu colour of auspiciousness, the reddish brown colour of mehendi is part of a binding ritual that precedes any wedding. Imbuing the wedding with beauty and the aura of serene womanhood, the henna ceremony is a nurtured tradition since times immemorial.
Mehendi has oft come to stand for the prosperity that a bride is expected to bring to her new family, and the strength of the bond of love between the two partners. In some parts of the country, the bride is not expected to do any chores in her new house until the mehendi fades away completely. Another interesting aspect of the ceremony is that often, the bridegroom's name is extrapolated into the intricate design, and used as a device to test the groom's ability to find it in his partner's hand (symbolising her heart). However, the associations with this ceremony vary from region to religion, scale to expanse.
With so many varied traditions, hosting a mehendi ceremony, which preludes and kicks off the wedding festivities, is an important task. With these tips, you can plan ahead to ensure that everything is perfect and that the bride has a fun day in the company of people whom she loves.
While choosing a venue for organising the ceremony, choose a place that is large enough for accommodating the expected number of guests. “An ideal ceremony should be organised in an open area – maybe a lawn or pool side area, a winter wedding is best suited to a day-time event and a summer wedding to a high-tea affair. “While a sunny afternoon at a farmhouse is ideal for a winter wedding, a banquet hall is a popular option in summer, as the bride can rest in air-conditioned comfort,” advises Sheetal from Arranged Affair wedding planners.
Arranging for mehendi experts is important, but more crucial is finding the ones who accommodate as many people as possible in one sitting – so that the bride is not inconvenienced. Special mehendi artists from all across the country offer special bridal options – from Arabic, coloured zari, tattoo and sequins, glitter, shaded to diamond mehendi designs. Wedding planners usually have a list of tried-andtested mehendi artists, and are oft eager to oblige.
The emphasis, however, at the ceremony is on the close family members and relatives blessing the bride. Advising guests to eat before they get mehendi put on their hands is a proactive decision.
Most afternoon affairs warrant appetisers, and a light lunch comes in special packages from renowned caterers. “We usually get orders for finger foods like light tikkas and chaat at mehendi ceremonies, but I think an event like this should be accompanied by fruity cocktails.
A mehendi ceremony gives a lot of people an opportunity to combine elements of a sangeet ceremony along. “Most couples prefer big DJ performances for their sangeet session, so we usually see family members performing or doing an impromptu jig at the mehendi ceremony. Family members and wedding planners can coordinate with each other over the arrangements to be made at the venue, such as musical instruments for accompaniment. Hiring singers is also a viable option for those strapped for time and willing to add a dash of traditional touch to the affair to make it more lively.
However, it is crucial to pander to the needs of the bride – for it's her day to enjoy with the family and those special to her. A special mehendi design, a facial treatment, or a cocktail hour with her friends – the ceremony should be made memorable for the woman of the hour.

Revive and Rejuvenate: Post- Heatwave Skin and Hair Care

As the intense heatwave of the past month wanes, many of us are left dealing with the aftermath on our skin and hair. Sun damage, dehydration, and heat exposure have likely taken a toll, leaving our complexion and locks yearning for some much-needed TLC. But worry not! Here are some deeply nourishing and practical tips to revive your skin and hair from the comfort of your home.

Skin Care: Replenish and Repair

1. Rehydrate from Within and Without

• Drink Infused Water: Hydration is vital. Create a daily ritual of drinking infused water-try adding slices of cucumber, lemon, and mint to a jug of water. These ingredients not only make hydration more enjoyable but also provide additional skin benefits like detoxification and anti- inflammatory properties.

• Aloe Vera and Cucumber Mist: Prepare a refreshing facial mist with aloe vera gel and cucumber juice. Keep it in the fridge and spritz your face throughout the day to keep your skin cool, hydrated, and calm.

2.Soothe and Heal Sunburns Naturally

•Oatmeal Baths: For sunburned skin, add a cup of finely ground oatmeal to a lukewarm bath. Soak for 15-20 minutes to relieve itching and irritation. Oatmeal's anti- inflammatory properties will soothe and moisturize your skin.

• Green Tea Compresses: Brew some green tea, let it cool, and then use a clean cloth to apply it to sunburned areas. Green tea's antioxidants and tannins help reduce redness and inflammation.

3.Revive Tanned and Dull Skin

• DIY Exfoliation: Mix ground coffee with honey to create a gentle exfoliating scrub. Use this once or twice a week to slough off dead skin cells and brighten your complexion. Coffee's natural antioxidants and honey's moisturizing properties work wonders together.

• Yogurt and Turmeric Mask:

Blend a tablespoon of yogurt with a pinch of turmeric and a few drops of lemon juice. Apply this mask to your face for 15 minutes before rinsing off. This mask helps lighten tan and improve skin texture, thanks to the lactic acid in yogurt and the brightening properties of turmeric and lemon.

4.Repair and Nourish Deeply

•Rosehip Oil Night Treatment: Incorporate rosehip oil into your nighttime routine. This oil is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins A and C, which help repair sun- damaged skin and improve skin elasticity. Massage a few drops into your face and neck before bed.

• Papaya and Honey Mask: Mash a slice of ripe papaya and mix it with a tablespoon of honey. Apply this mask to your face for 20 minutes. Papaya's enzymes help exfoliate dead skin cells, while honey hydrates and soothes the skin.

5.Consistent Sun Protection

•Natural Sunscreen Recipe: If you prefer homemade solutions, try mixing equal parts of shea butter, coconut oil, and zinc oxide powder for a natural sunscreen. Apply it generously before heading out, and don't forget to reapply every two hours.

Hair Care: Nourish and Strengthen

1. Deep Hydration and Conditioning

•Coconut Milk Hair Mask: Whisk together a cup of coconut milk and two tablespoons of honey. Apply this mixture to your hair, focusing on the ends. Leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing with a mild shampoo. This mask deeply conditions and restores moisture to dry, heat-damaged hair.

• Leave-In Aloe Vera Spray: Blend aloe vera gel with a few drops of lavender essential oil and water. Pour it into a spray bottle and use it as a leave-in conditioner to hydrate and detangle your hair

2. Restore and Repair with Oils

• Warm Oil Treatment: Warm some olive oil or argan oil and massage it into your scalp and hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it on for at least an hour before washing it out. This treatment helps repair damage, improve scalp health, and add shine.

•Avocado and Banana Mask: Mash an avocado and a banana together. Apply this rich mask to your hair and let it sit for 30 minutes. Avocado provides essential fatty acids, while banana adds moisture and softness.

3. Sun Protection for Hair

• DIY Hair Sunscreen: Mix a tablespoon of shea butter with a few drops of jojoba oil and apply it to your hair before sun exposure. This mixture helps protect your hair from UV damage and keeps it hydrated.

• Hats and Scarves: Make wearing hats or scarves a fashionable part of your sunny day outfits. Not only do they protect your hair from direct sunlight, but they also prevent your scalp from burning.

4. Regular Maintenance

• Gentle Detangling: Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair when it's wet, starting from the ends and working your way up to prevent breakage.

• Rice Water Rinse: After shampooing, rinse your hair with fermented rice water. The inositol in rice water helps repair and strengthen hair from within.

5.Embrace Natural Hairstyles

• Braids and Buns: Opt for protective hairstyles like braids or buns that minimize sun exposure and reduce the risk of hair damage.

• Avoid Heat Styling: Give your hair a break from heat styling tools. Embrace your natural texture and use products that enhance your hair's natural waves or curls.

Recovering from the effects of extreme heat requires a commitment to nurturing your skin and hair back to health. By incorporating these easy, at-home remedies into your daily routine, you can effectively soothe, hydrate, and restore your skin and hair. Embrace the opportunity to pamper yourself with these natural treatments, and you'll soon see a radiant and resilient transformation. Remember, your skin and hair deserve the best care, especially after braving the scorching sun.
